School Based Scouting is again joining partnership with the 21st Century after school program at Battle Creek Public Schools and serves as a key component toward positive youth development. This program provides scouting programs for both boys and girls in kindergarten through middle school. Held in six week sessions, scouts receive lessons in respect, courage, manners, self-esteem and customs of other lands. All of this is accomplished within a safe and fun learning environment where children of different racial, religious and financial backgrounds gather as a group to learn.
Community service is also a part of the curriculum and during these sessions the scouts will complete many community service projects for local organizations in the community. The Scouts will be making cards for nursing homes, valentines for the local police departments and in March for March is Reading Month, they will make bookmarks for the residents at various senior homes. Children like doing projects for others and School Based Scouting builds children of courage, confidence and character, who make this community a better place.
Oftentimes, this program serves as a pathway out of poverty and while attending the scouting program they develop a belief of their own self worth, develop character, talents, abilities and a creative spirit. They learn to develop an ability to cope with the stresses of growing up today as they develop their leadership skills toward helping to make a better tomorrow.
The local school based scouting program is directed by Penny Diehl, who is outreach services executive for the Girl Scouts of Glowing Embers Council, Inc. located at 221 E. Roosevelt Street, Battle Creek, MI 49037. For more information about the school based scouting program contact Penny at (269) 965-5519.
